New Category: Daily Thoughts

September 13th, 2009 Simon Voggeneder No comments

In order to challenge your thinking, you have to work with associations. Take a random word and think of everything you associate with. From there on, articulate what you think about these associations. Which feelings and memories arise from them?

This is the key element of this new section of my blog. After pondering quite a while over possible topics for articles, I will let myself be inspired by random words and the associations they spike.

To do this, I make use of the Dictionary.com “Word of the Day” RSS feed available here. Dictionary.com supplies the feed readers with new words every day – usually words that are outside of the lexicon of colloquial language. This leaves me with two advantages – I explore and widen my knowledge on a myriad of topics and memorize new and unusual words that may better my writing :)

So watch out for (near-)daily updates in this section. There occasionally will be breaks due to lack of internet access but normally, every day will bring a new splash of thoughts.

Comments are highly appreciated – as usual :)

In love for life
Simon

Unifying Powers

August 8th, 2009 Simon Voggeneder No comments

Good evening, fellow readers!

Some of your might have discovered a surge of postings done within one single day and are a bit surprised how these postings stray from the blog network principle I have explained some postings before.

I first intended this to be a blog network with clear-cut categories until I noticed that I got myself into a bit of a hurry. I noticed, that this might be just too big to maintain, if this blog is merely something I do on the sideway – I am and never will be a full-time blogger, so I am of the opinion that – if I am to keep a blog up to date – I need to focus on one blog containing all the information.

All of the categories show interests of mine – training, nutrition, media (movies, music), spirituality and personal development – and will be part of this blog. If you are not interested in one of the particular areas, feel free to skip postings irrelevant to you.

As time progresses, I will implement RSS feeds for all of the categories specifically, so that you can be informed about the sections you are interested only – bear with me until then.

I wish you all a very good night!

Shine on,
Simon

Little fun with subdomains

August 2nd, 2009 Simon Voggeneder No comments

Good evening, fellow readers!

Throughout my experience with hosting, I have now experienced tremendous problems with the management of subdomains. I initially intended all of my blogs to be their own subdomains, but as they seem to be randomly defunct, I see myself forced to switch back to sub-folders of one root domain.

The blogs keep their name and if god grants it, the blogs will once run under their own subdomain without hassle. I have yet to figure out, wherein the problem lies – the subdomains point to the correct server directories and yet they do not deliver the content they should – arguably the result I anticipated. I’ll keep up to it.

Worst case: The subdomains won’t be introduced.

But this is alleviated by the fact that the content does not suffer from this technical limitations – just keep on reading.

Warm regards

ishina

blog network design updates

July 28th, 2009 Simon Voggeneder No comments

Good evening, dear readers!

On the second day of my endeavour I had to resign to the forgotten knowledge of Adobe Photoshop I had once acquired. I found myself unable to create graphics which were good enough to use them.

State-of-the-art design has a lot of aspects to satisfy, at least for some people. For me, design has a lot to do with the art of simplicity – a reason why I love the wordpress design. Everyone who knows the wordpress administration panel knows that it is very minimalistic yet artistic – I simply love this kind of design.

As for the blog design I decided to go with a simplistic theme – iNove to name it. The default header – however – was not satisfactory. It did not tell anything about the upcoming site’s contents and was therefore of little use (although very good-looking). I then went on to design a new one.

Amongst the things that are fancy these days are glossy buttons and I admit I like them – so I had to find out how to create them. Thankfully, YouTube is overflowing with help on these topics. This tutorial helped me out, finally, to create glossy buttons for my header.

The first attempt, however, was looking quite okay but very off, compared to the general design of the blog theme. Here is it:

You will inevitably notice the thick strokes and the bright colors distracting the eye. I liked the glossy effect of the elements but they did not fit together well with the general look of the blog theme – the whole header just seemed very ‘off’. So I trashed the whole effort and started anew – already a few hours invested in researching the right design elements – to assure the right and flexible design, a clean layer design had to be established and took some time to be implemented.

For the new attempt, I sticked to the original colors of the blog’s theme. I pasted the grey borders for the header’s border and went on creating a skeleton for the elements on new layers to be independent of the actual element design. The total number of layers is just below 10, including text layers. I created layers for:

  • the general border
  • the border framework of the colored buttons
  • the button background colors
  • the button background overlay
  • the body background color
  • the body background raster
  • the body pictures’ border framework
  • the body pictures
  • the body pictures’ overlay
  • text blocks

The final result, after some hours of more or less hard work is this:

The header file of the blog naturaltraining.ishina.infoThe header file of the blog naturaltraining.ishina.info

From my perspective, the work paid off. I learned how to created glossy elements in Adobe Photoshop and created a simplistic yet good-looking header file which is easily adaptable for all of my upcoming sub-blogs. See how the “training” shines bright? It is the indicator of which section you are visiting at the moment – in addition to the blog title, which is self-explanatory.

I hope you like the design tweaks – I am looking forward to any kind of commentary to it!

Warm regards

Simon
